Morning Prayers

Beloved Brethren: — May this glad Easter morn find the members of this dear church having a pure peace, a fresh joy, a clear vision of heaven here, — heaven within us, — and an awakened sense of the risen Christ. May long lines of light span the horizon of their hope and brighten their faith with a dawn that knows no twilight and no night. May those who discourse music to-day, sing as the angels heaven’s symphonies that come to earth. May the dear Sunday School children always be gathering Easter lilies of love with happy hearts and ripening goodness. Today may they find some sweet scents and beautiful blossoms in their Leader’s love, which she sends to them this glad morn in the flowers and the cross from Pleasant View, smiling upon them.

The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

Discussion points

265 — WATCH lest you retain the beginner’s conception of Christian Science as coming to make this hell of mortal existence a happy place, by taking away everything discordant. This primary picture is what we have to present to the world, in order to win them over to our side, just as it is necessary to depict life in the navy in glowing colors, in order to entice men to enlist. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is to banish forever the cause of all discord, namely, the human mind; but this warfare does not bring peace to this false mind, but a sword.

Sickness, sin and poverty are merely indications of the error connected with a mortal sense of existence, and it is this mortal sense that Christian Science comes to eliminate. At the same time, when a man is sick, he is in no mental condition to gain a comprehensive idea of the truth, because he is frightened, disturbed and confused. The sickness is the proof of this fact. So he must be healed, if for no other reason than to restore him to a mental state in which he will be able to grasp the truth. The price he is expected to pay for this release is that he will take up in earnest the work of overcoming mortality. He is like a man who is released on probation. He breaks his parole if he settles down to enjoy the freedom from distress that Science has brought him, and may have to go back to jail, until he learns the lesson, namely, that mortality, whether discordant or concordant, is not the reality of existence, and hence is to be dissipated, in order that reality may prevail.

Before this missionary work can be carried out successfully, the deterrent of animal magnetism must be handled. Once a student complained to her practitioner that she could not handle animal magnetism. He asserted that God had given her the power to resist the devil, with the promise in the Bible, that if she would do so, it would flee from her. He told her not to believe that she was or could be a victim of this evil, since she had within her grasp, through her faithful demonstration of Christian Science, the ability to resist and overcome all suggestions of the carnal mind. David used this method with Goliath. That ponderous belief seemed deadly and powerful; yet David detected and demonstrated the nothingness of the enemy which he had to overthrow.

Thoughts shared on the Lesson from readers:

Are Sin, Disease and Death Real?

REAL: Actually being or existing; not fictitious or imaginary. In law, pertaining to things fixed, permanent or immovable.(Webster 1828)

UNREAL: not substantial; having appearance only.(Webster 1828)

On page 480 in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, she writes, “The Bible declares: ‘All things were made by Him [the divine Word]; and without Him was not anything, made that was made.’ This is the eternal verity of divine Science. If sin, sickness, death were understood as nothingness, they would disappear. As vapor melts before the sun, so evil would vanish before the reality of good. One must hide the other. How important, then, to choose good as the reality! Man is tributary to God, Spirit, and to nothing else.”

To me that says it all! I can choose to believe that which is nothingness, non-existence, Nothing; a thing of no value. (Webster 1828) or that which is fixed, permanent, immovable, harmonious and eternal, the reality of good, God, Spirit.
