Morning Prayers

Make supplication to God daily that you may be delivered from all beliefs of sin or of sickness, and after doing this, then turn to and demand of yourself to realize their unreality, and recognize your power over the temptation to yield to any such illusion.

— from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the “Blue Book”), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 48

Goodness never fails to receive its reward, for goodness makes life a blessing. As an active portion of one stupendous whole, goodness identifies man with universal good. Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing.

Discussion points

447 — WATCH, when you work on a problem, that you recognize and handle two thought digressors, namely, absorption in the present discordant condition, and anticipation of a return to physical comfort and harmony. Only as you see and meet these two, are you left free to work on the problem scientifically.

GOLDEN TEXT: Romans 13:11

“Now it is high time to awke out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”

We must stand without wavering. There need not be much mental work done, “Be still and know that Iam God” is all that is really necessary. The harder you “work” mentally – sometimes – the more real the claim appears – so do as Jesus did – expect the – “WORD” – TO HEAL INSTANTLY.

Now the next step is to hold fast to this – let this Christ rise in you. How? First practice peace. Jesus said,” My peace I give unto you.” We do not recognize the importance of these words, nor of what Paul said – “None of these things move me.” Speak peace to the turmoil within – hundreds of times a day. Learn what the word means. Speak it to all things and persons, either verbally or mentally and especially to yourself.

When you acquire quietness of heart, when knowing that you are one with – ALL THE POWER THERE IS, when you consciously feel peace because there is nothing else but that peace for God’s likeness, then you take the next step – possession. A sense of possession is as much a law of your being as the distinct eternal sense of health or the distinct sense of activity. Practice having this sense of all things and men having dominion over all things. Doesn’t Mrs. Eddy say, “God giving all, man having all that God gives?” Doesn’t that mean anything to you? I believe that this possession of what God gives us – and He gives all – is the step leading to the understanding of dominion – or that which gives us what seems to be lacking.

Thoughts shared on the Lesson from readers:

Shield: To cover from danger, to defend, to protect

Faith: Trust, to believe, to obey. A firm belief of God’s testimony, and of the truth of the gospel. (Webster’s 1828)

“Faith, in this case, is what deflects the attacks of the enemy. The other parts of the armor will protect the soldier if the shield is bypassed. But the strongest defense is the shield: it actually protects the rest of the armor! ….Note, ……”shield of faith” also counters the frequent criticism of religion as “blind faith.” Shields are purposeful instruments, not walls to hide behind. Shields, by their nature, are meant to be used with strategy, awareness, and cooperation.” (Bible

“Faith is a protective barrier between us and the schemes of Satan. When we believe God and take Him at His word, we remain grounded in truth, the lies of the enemy lose their power, and we become overcomers. In that way, faith is our shield.” (Got

“Christ’s disciples, who have on the shield, and fight the fight of faith: and this is “above all” to be taken, as being the most useful part of the Christian armour; or “with all”, with the rest, this is to be taken, and by no means to be neglected; and it is to be used “in all”; in every temptation of Satan, in every conflict with that enemy, or any other.” (Bible study tools)

Mrs Eddy writes in Prose works “Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort.”My p.210

So, by having faith, wholeheartedly trusting in God, infinite good, staying “grounded in the truth,” holding our thoughts steadfastly on the omnipotence of God, we are able to, with “The shield of Faith” defeat the lies of mortal mind, taking away it’s supposed power, defeating and overcoming “error of every sort.”

Final Readings

Teachers must conform strictly to the rules of divine Science announced in the Bible and their textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” They must themselves practise, and teach others to practise, the Hebrew Decalogue, the Sermon on the Mount, and the understanding and enunciation of these according to Christ.

They must always have on armor, and resist the foe within and without. They cannot arm too thoroughly against original sin, appearing in its myriad forms: passion, appetites, hatred, revenge, and all the et cetera of evil. Christian Scientists cannot watch too sedulously, or bar their doors too closely, or pray to God too fervently, for deliverance from the claims of evil. Thus doing,
